번역가로 활동하기 위해 열공 중이다. 현직 번역가 선생님이 쓴 책을 읽었다. 영어원서를 읽는 게 큰 도움이 된다고 했다. 그리하여 내 수준에 찾는 영어원서를 찾기 시작했다. 프랑스 소설가 생택쥐페리의 어린왕자, 영국 소설가 로알드 달의 소설책 시리즈가 투톱을 달리고 있었다. 정작 구매로 이어진 책은 플립(Flipped)이었다. 플립 역시 넷플릭스에 영화가 올려져 있다. 영화를 먼저 봤다. 꼬맹이 남녀의 첫사랑 이야기를 다뤘는데 어쩜 그리 풋풋하고 가슴 설레는지. 첫사랑을 이렇게 설레게 연출한 영화도 드물다. 오늘 소개할 스쿨 라이브러리 저널 선정 '아이들이 읽기 좋은 100권의 소설' 목록에 플립도 당당히 올라 있다.
스쿨 라이브러리는 사서, 미국 학교 사서, 도서관 사서, 문학평론가 등 전문가들의 리뷰가 실리는 잡지다. 그만큼 공신력 있는 목록이라고 할 수 있다. 원서를 몇권 읽어보니 아이들이 보는 책이 영어공부 하기 제일 좋았다. 너무 어려운 단어가 나오지 않으면서도 일상에서 자주 사용하는 단어와 관용구로 꽉 채워져 있다. 고로 이 목록의 타이틀인 '아이들이 읽기 좋은 100권의 소설' 을 '영어공부 하기 좋은 100권의 원서'로 바꿔도 무리가 없다.
